Sustainability Initiatives at The Tamara Resorts
Our initiatives across both The Tamara Kodai and The Tamara Coorg reflect our dedication to creating a lasting positive impact on the environment and society.
Eliminating Plastic
Both The Tamara Kodai and The Tamara Coorg have phased out single-use plastics in favour of eco-friendly alternatives. At The Tamara Kodai, glass water bottles replace plastic, and guest amenities such as wooden combs, dental kits, and cotton buds eliminate plastic. Similarly, The Tamara Coorg uses wooden-based bathroom amenities instead of plastic, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
Eco-Friendly Housekeeping Practices
At The Tamara Kodai, we use biodegradable rubbish bags throughout the property and repurpose discarded linens into dusters. We’ve replaced single-use plastic bottles with refillable glass dispensers in guest rooms. The Tamara Coorg has implemented similar practices, with all linens being recycled and reusable laundry baskets in place to cut down on waste.
Sustainable Gardens and Organic Practices
Both resorts feature organic gardens that supply fresh, sustainably sourced produce to our kitchens. The Tamara Kodai’s garden produces organic vegetables and herbs, contributing to the guest dining experience. Similarly, The Tamara Coorg maintains its own organic coffee plantation, where guests can experience farm-to-table dining and engage with the sustainability of the estate.
Waste Management and Recycling Initiatives (Manthan)
At The Tamara Coorg, we employ the “Manthan” waste management system, which processes organic waste into compost without the use of chemicals. The system’s daily processing capacity of 140 kg of biodegradable waste is critical in turning organic waste into compost, which is then used to nourish the resort’s organic coffee plantation. The Tamara Kodai implements similar composting techniques for waste generated on-site, ensuring a closed-loop system that supports the property’s ecological footprint reduction.
Rainwater Harvesting
Both resorts have established rainwater harvesting systems to collect and filter rainwater for use in gardening, landscaping, and irrigation. The Tamara Kodai’s system supports sustainable water management, helping maintain a responsible water supply across the property. The Tamara Coorg’s extensive rainwater collection system, with its 80 lakh-litre capacity, ensures that water resources are carefully managed for both gardening and replenishing groundwater during the rainy season.
Promoting Local Communities
Both The Tamara Kodai and The Tamara Coorg support local artisans and community development. At The Tamara Kodai, The Verandah showcases products made by local craftspeople, empowering them to preserve traditional skills. The Tamara Coorg focuses on sourcing fresh produce from nearby farmers and supporting local artisans, promoting fair trade and benefiting the surrounding communities economically.
Composting and Organic Practices
Both resorts embrace composting as a core principle in waste management. At The Tamara Kodai, organic waste is composted on-site, enriching the garden soil naturally. Similarly, The Tamara Coorg uses its “Manthan” system to compost all biodegradable waste, producing organic manure that nourishes its coffee plantation and contributes to sustainable farming practices.
Thoughtful Amenities
At The Tamara Kodai, every guest room is equipped with eco-friendly amenities such as wooden combs, razors, and biodegradable toiletries, ensuring that the resort’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of the guest experience. Similarly, The Tamara Coorg has adopted sustainable bathroom products, including eco-friendly wooden-based alternatives, eliminating plastic waste.
Energy Management and Solar Power
Both resorts prioritise energy efficiency. At The Tamara Kodai, LED lighting and motion sensors are used throughout the property to reduce energy consumption. The Tamara Coorg, with its solar panel installation slated to begin operation in FY 2024-2025, has already made significant strides in energy conservation by using energy-efficient appliances and promoting energy-saving practices among guests and staff.
Significant Milestones
We have implemented innovative strategies, such as carbon footprint monitoring, waste reduction monitoring and sustainable food practices, to achieve our sustainability goals.
